Bryan Hymel is one of the fastest-rising tenor stars in the world of opera today. Hymel began the 2012-2013 season as Rodolfo in La Bohème for the Opera Company of Philadelphia before returning to London to sing the challenging title role in Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable for the Royal Opera House. Hymel made his last-minute Metropolitan Opera debut in December of 2012, stepping in for the last four performances as Enée in Francesca Zambello’s production of Les Troyens. The New York Times praised his “impassioned and confident performance” as Enée, as well as his “unflagging stamina and impetuous abandon.” Hymel was also seen in the MET’s Live in HD broadcast of Les Troyens in theaters worldwide.
Hymel’s exciting season continues in 2013 as a soloist in the Classical Series of the Jerusalem Symphony and with a European Tour of La Damnation de Faust with the Orchestre National du Capitole, Toulouse. In the summer of 2013, Hymel makes two more exciting debuts, singing with Oper Dresden in Der Rosenkavalier and the Salzburg Festival as Archangel Michael in Walter Braunfels’ Jeanne d’Arc.
Hymel began 2012 in London as the Prince in the Royal Opera House’s first-ever staging of Rusalka. He continued the season performing the title roles in Faust with Lyric Opera Baltimore and Robert Le Diable in Salerno, Italy with the Teatro Municipale. He then returned to the Royal Opera House stage for performances as Enée in Les Troyens before finishing the season at Santa Fe Opera in concert with Susan Graham.
Hymel has appeared in many of the world’s most accomplished opera houses and festivals. He made his debut at Teatro alla Scala in 2010 singing Don José in Carmen (a role he later reprised at the Bayerische Staatsoper) and returned to the Santa Fe Opera in 2011 to sing the title role in Faust. Hymel appeared as Énée in the Pierre Audi production of Les Troyens with De Nederlandse Opera and as Pinkerton in a revival of the late director Anthony Minghella’s production of Madama Butterfly with both the English National Opera and the Canadian Opera Company. He also appeared as Don José in Carmen with the Canadian Opera Company and in the Royal Opera House’s filmed 3D version. Additional appearances include Luigi in Il tabarro and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with New Orleans Opera, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly with Palm Beach Opera, the Prince in Ruslaka at the Wexford Festival Opera, and Guido in Zemlinsky’s A Florentine Tragedy at the Bard Festival under the direction of Leon Botstein.
A sought-after recitalist and concert performer, Hymel made his New York recital debut with Michelle DeYoung under the auspices of the George London Foundation, of which he was a 2007 George London Award winner. His Carnegie Hall debut came in 2008 with the Opera Orchestra of New York in a gala concert also featuring Renée Fleming, Marcello Giordani, and Dolora Zajick. Internationally, Hymel made his London recital debut on the Rosenblatt Recital Series and also appeared as Don José in a concert performance of Carmen with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Caracas, Venezuela, conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.
Among his accolades, the New Orleans native is the Top Prize Winner of the 2009 Gerda Lissner Foundation Competition and was the First-Prize Winner of the 2008 Licia Albanese/Puccini Foundation Competition, the 2008 Loren L. Zachary Vocal Competition, and the 2008 Giulio Gari Foundation Competition. He was a grand finalist in the 2000 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Hymel studied at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia under Bill Schuman and was a participant in San Francisco Opera Center’s Merola Program.
