Gian Carlo Menotti may not have been a mystic, but he certainly enjoyed composing music about the raw passion of humankind. His operas are based on the gritty realism of our fallibilities and struggles. Menotti, as composer and librettist, was a true pioneer, bringing opera firmly into the postwar era by presenting his operas on popular radio and eventually on television in 1951 with Amahl and the Night Visitors.
The Medium is a tale of abuse, alcoholism, and tragedy that’s buried in the mysticism of fraud and lies infused with some of Menotti’s most gripping music.
