Winners chosen for The Donald W. Wood Sr. Vocal Competition

dsc_0303The New Orleans Opera association proudly announces the WINNERS OF THE 2016-2017 DONALD W. WOOD SR. VOCAL COMPETITION (presented by the New Orleans Opera Association, a collaborative effort with Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts and Preparatory Program, Newcomb Department of Music, Tulane University, and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) held at the Freda Lupin Memorial Hall on the campus of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts October 15, 2016 at 1 PM (Special thanks to the 2016-2017 Wood Competition Patrons:  Susan and Vern Raburn, the Wood Competition Director: Debby Hirsch Wood, Kyle Wedberg, President and CEO of NOCCA and Phyllis Treigle (NOCCA), and Carol Rausch (Loyola and NOOA)).  The Wood Competition was open to all Louisiana sophomores, juniors, and seniors for the 2016-2017 academic year but only 25 students were accepted to compete (6 males and 19 females).  The winners are as follows:

FIRST PLACE FEMALE: Victoria Elizabeth Richard  Senior, Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts, Opelousas, Louisiana, Teacher:  Corliss Smith (awarded $1,000 by the New Orleans Opera Association/Susan and Vern Raburn 2016-2017 Patrons)

SECOND PLACE FEMALE: Sarah-Katherine McCallum   Sophomore, Cedar Creek School, Ruston, Louisiana, Teachers:  Claire Vangelisti, Cindy Hockenjos (awarded $500 by the New Orleans Opera Association/Susan and Vern Raburn 2016-2017 Patrons)

FIRST PLACE MALE: William Nicholas Dopp  Junior, Loranger High School, Loranger, Louisiana,  Teacher:  Brent Goodrich (awarded $1,000 by the New Orleans Opera Association/Susan and Vern Raburn 2016-2017 Patrons)

SECOND PLACE MALE Andrew David Aceves  Sophomore, St. Paul’s School, Covington, Louisiana, Teacher:  Gail Adams  (awarded $500 by the New Orleans Opera Association/Susan and Vern Raburn 2016-2017 Patrons)

HONORABLE MENTION: Madeleine Eugenie Cucullu  Sophomore, New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, Teacher: Phyllis Treigle (awarded $150 by the New Orleans Opera Association/Susan and Vern Raburn 2016-2017 Patrons)
