Opera Nouvelle – Sculpture Garden Mixed-Media Concert

Sunday October 20, 2019 3:00 PM @ NOMA Sculpture Garden

Welcome to the sequel that’s better than the original!

This stunning sequel to the 2018 Feast for the Senses features singers, pianists, readers and other musical instruments in a dazzling display of opera and musical theatre favorites that will celebrate The Classics, Reflections and Magic and Wonder in a three-course aural and visual delight for the audience.

The idea of mixed media is not a new one, and opera has, since the early 17th Century been at the center of many traditional and emerging visual and performing art forms. Come and relish musical selections from early Baroque favorites, such as Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Cavalli’s La Calisto, the Classics, such as Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, and even newer works such as Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the runaway Broadway Hit, Hamilton!

Innovative Explorations at Le Musée de f.p.c.

This event with OperaCréole is part of an ongoing series with community organizations sponsored by OPERA America’s Innovation Grants.

Did you know New Orleans is home to one of the country’s few attractions dedicated exclusively to preserving the material culture of and telling the story of free people of color? It is. And you are invited to join us at Le Musée de f.p.c. for a presentation and tour celebrating real 19th Century New Orleans free people of color who contributed so much to our music, culture, and economy.

  • Sunday, September 8, 2019, at 3:00 p.m.
  • at Le Musée de f.p.c. 2336 Esplanade Avenue

Today, inside Le Musée de f.p.c., walls and shelves reveal rarely seen documents — manumission papers granting freedom to former slaves, property records showing that one-third of the French Quarter was once owned by people of color and, finally, a replica of a petition that was hand-delivered in 1864 to President Lincoln by two prominent free black men from New Orleans, Arnold Bertonneau and Jean Baptiste Roudanez, the brother of Louis Charles.
