DON’T MISS OUR NEW ORLEANS OPERA SUMMER CAMPS!

MUSIC, DRAMA and TECHNICAL THEATRE CAMP: ages 9-12: JULY 15 – 19, 2019 from 9am-3pm and JULY 22 – 26 from 9am-3pm

LOCATION: Dillard University Theatre Building on Main Campus

TUITION: $100.00 per student; students keep their props and costumes used in the performance, please bring a bag lunch,

The GOALS for this camp are to have the students build props and costume pieces for CARMEN and THE MAGIC FLUTE, rehearse medleys of songs from each of the operas, and then perform these songs for their parents, family and peers at the end of the camp.

Each day the students will work on these projects:

  • Students will construct costumes, props and stage makeup!
  • Students will learn popular songs from Carmen and The Magic Flute!
  • Students will combine dialogue and songs into a LIVE performance at the end of the tenth day!

TECHNICAL THEATRE CAMPS:  June 3-7 (ages 9-12), June 10-14 (ages 13-17), June 17 -21 (ages 9-12) and June 24-28 (ages 9-12)
DAYS and TIMES: Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
TUITION: $400.00 Per Student; students depart at the end of the camp with a makeup kit valued at $95.00 and other craft making supplies.
LOCATION: New Orleans Opera Scenic Studio

This summer the New Orleans Opera Association offers three 1 week camps for students in the age 9 through 12 year old age bracket, and one week-long camp for ages 13-17. Each day the student will work on these projects:

  • Costume Accessories – Students will construct an Egyptian collar, wrist cuffs, and a snake crown!
  • Prop Construction – Students will make gemstones, create an urn and make a potions book
  • Horror Makeup – Students will create spooky special effects, like blood, burns, cuts, bruises and scars!

ADULT HAT MAKING CLASSES

This summer the opera will sponsor two beginner hat making classes offered at our scenic studio in Metairie. The classes will be taught by Jan Wutkowski one of the top milliners in the United States. Classes are limited to 10 and spaces are filling fast. There is a 10% discount if you take both classes.
Fabulous and Fun—Small Headpieces for the Beginning Hat Maker – Thurs & Fri., June 27-28, 5:30-8:30
Come make a ‘fascinator’ or ‘demi-chapeau’ using real millinery (hat making) skills, taught by a professional milliner. Your demi-chapeau can be tailored and wedding-worthy, or a flirty, fun more costumy piece. Learn to manipulate this easy to work with straw, that comes in a multitude of great colors, to create elegant loops, flowers and leaves, and some fun fantasy bits. Also, learn hat-securing secrets so that these beauties will stay on your head comfortably. No prior experience needed and a fun class to do with your friends. A great class to start within learning a few millinery techniques. Supply fee: $15 Class fee: $150
Big Brimmed Beauties — Sat & Sun, June 29th & 30th, 10-4pm
Have you wondered how classic big-brimmed straw fashion hats are created? Come learn traditional hat making skills including: learning to measure your head for a comfortable fit, choosing crown styles that flatter the wearer, blocking high-end fashion straws over crown blocks, how to stiffen the straws, add millinery wire to the brim edge for stability and a way to ‘swoop’ your brim beautifully, and then some embellishment tricks of the trade. Embellishments might include ribbon, silk flowers, vintage veiling/netting and even a few feather tricks (curling included). A perfect class for those wanting to begin the practice of millinery using time-honoured techniques. Straws are hand-woven and are a very high-grade. Some hand-sewing skills are recommended. Supply fee: $75 Class fee:$250
