At the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts
In Partnership with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra
OPERA IS BACK at the Mahalia Jackson Theater!
New Orleans Opera and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra are partnering for this homecoming production featuring local filmmaker, Samantha Aldana.
The first act of Die Walküre is a perfect selection to bring our audiences back into the Mahalia Jackson Theatre for the Performing Arts. With just three singers onstage and a running time of approximately 65 minutes, we can have an incredible operatic experience while safely returning to live performance.
Wagner’s Die Walküre is the second opera in his epic Ring Cycle, and the first act introduces us to Siegmund and Sieglinde, twins who are separated in childhood and who reunite years later. Sieglinde is in a loveless marriage with Hunding, her captor, and is rescued by her twin after they finally recognize each other.
With both libretto and music by Richard Wagner, this operatic performance is filled with drama, poignancy, and a thrilling climactic scene. Carlos Miguel Prieto, Music Director of the LPO, will conduct a semi-staged performance of this act which includes a stunning film installation by local New Orleans filmmaker Samantha Aldana to accompany Wagner’s music.
